Can care make a difference?
You will get best reliability and life from your tyres if you maintain correct pressures at all times and drive smoothly at moderate speeds. In optimum conditions, passenger car tyres can last as long as 100,000 kms. In the most adverse conditions, tyres can be destroyed in a single journey.

What are the priorities?

Great enemies of tyres are:
Friction - harsh acceleration, braking, cornering and Alignment faults.
Heat - incorrect pressures, high speeds, excessive friction.
Sharp objects - nails, stony roads, rocks, kerbs, jagged potholes. Read More || Close

How important is pressure?
Tyre pressure matters - for the vehicle's stability, safety and tyre life, set and maintain your tyres at exactly the pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. There is usually a label on the inside edge of the driver's door.

While pressure can be slightly increased (especially when carrying heavy loads), never run tyres below recommended pressure - it causes dangerous handling characteristics, increases the rate of tyre wear, and can lead to casing failure through excessive sidewall flex and heat build-up.

Unnecessarily high pressures are less hazardous, but they give a harsh ride, increase central tread wear, and are more punishing to wheel bearings, ball joints and other mechanical components.

Regular checks and fixes
Thanks to advanced materials, modern tyres maintain their pressures well but pressures are so important they should still be checked at least once a fortnight.

At the same time check the sidewalls (inner and outer) for impact damage - any cut or bulge indicates trauma to the tyre casing which could lead to failure. Read More || Close

Visually examine the tread for any sign or damage or uneven wear; run your hand over the tread surface - it should feel the same in all directions; any visible un-evenness or feathering which feels different to the touch in one direction gives an early indication of misalignment or binding brakes.

Tyres with extreme wear or casing damage should be replaced. Attend promptly to any alignment, balancing or other mechanical defects.

Modern rubber compounds are resistant to most chemicals (eg petrol, oil) but contamination should be avoided and tyres should be washed with soapy water and a stiff brush.
